“Big Five” Publishing Houses: Simon & Schuster
Established in 1924, Simon & Schuster earned a reputation for pioneering several industry “firsts.” In 1939, Simon & Schuster ushered in the paperback revolution with the founding of Pocket Books, America’s first paperback publisher. Years later, Simon & Schuster made history again as the first publisher to offer an original work by a major author (Riding the Bullet by Stephen King) exclusively in electronic form.
Today, Simon & Schuster publishes approximately 2,000 titles annually. The publisher’s hardcovers, trade and mass market paperbacks, electronic books, and audiobooks (CD and digital download) for readers of all ages and genres are distributed in more than 200 countries around the world. Additionally, Simon & Schuster Audio Publishing is one of the largest audiobook publishers in the industry; the audio division is also home to Pimsleur Language Program, one of the fastest-growing language education series in the world.
Simon & Schuster books have been awarded dozens of Pulitzer Prizes, National Book Awards, National Book Critics Circle Awards, Grammy Awards, and Newbery and Caldecott Medals. Its imprints include Scribner, which prides itself on a legacy of producing high quality literary fiction, nonfiction, and prize winners; and Atheneum Books for Young Readers, which publishes books for children and young adults. Notable authors include Stephen King, Jason Reynolds, and Hillary Clinton.
Simon & Schuster is headquartered in New York, but its more than 1,500 employees also work in offices across the United States, as well as Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, India, the Netherlands, and Belgium. The publisher operates distribution centers in New Jersey and Tennessee, including a new, one-million-square-foot facility that opened in 2022.
Simon & Schuster has undergone several changes in ownership over the past century, including acquisitions by Paramount, Viacom, and CBS. In 2023, Paramount sold the publishing house to the private equity firm KKR (Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co.) for $1.6 billion in cash. Since then, Simon and Schuster has been a stand-alone, independent publishing house. As a private company, it is no longer obligated to disclose quarterly financials. Reports indicate that 2023 sales fell by 8%, but profit margins remained large.
In 2024, Simon & Schuster acquired Dutch Book Publisher Veen Bosch & Keuning, the largest book publisher in the Netherlands. This transaction represents Simon & Schuster’s first acquisition of a non-English publisher, underscoring the publisher’s international ambitions.
Despite seemingly unsteady sales (which is typical in the publishing industry) Paramount’s sale of Simon & Schuster emphasizes the value of the “Big 5” publisher. In addition, Simon & Schuster has demonstrated resilience in the face of an increasingly digital market with its robust audio division. Above all, Simon & Schuster’s recent domestic and international expansions are promising for the publishing giant, as well as its suppliers. Taiwanese printers should take note of these developments and be prepared to capitalize on increasing demand.
