Taiwan is ranked 2nd in Asia in global democracy index behind New Zealand and 8th in the global rankings of 167 countries and territories. It moved up three place since 2020. The island nation has received a score of 8.99 out of 10 on the index of 2021.
Foreign policy is to strengthen relations with key partners to raise Taiwan’s global profile. International participation is a crucial step. Taiwan continues to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation with allies, and bolster ties with the United States, Japan, Europe.
New Southbound Policy (NSP): Started in 2016, “looking South” is to diversify Taiwan’s ties in a dynamic Asian region. Taiwan is focused on strengthening ties with Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand in specific economic and people-to-people areas, such as agricultural cooperation, medicine and public health, and youth exchanges.
